Parliament’s thematic committee on peace and security has commended the Great Zimbabwe Hydro Power Plant for its contribution to national energy security and sustainable development following an oversight visit to the facility.
The committee toured the power station as part of its mandate to assess initiatives that support the country’s energy resilience and broader national development objectives, with a particular focus on renewable energy projects.
In a statement, Parliament said the visit enabled legislators to appreciate the role being played by the hydroelectric project in strengthening the country’s power generation capacity and promoting clean energy.
The Great Zimbabwe Hydro Power Plant, located in Masvingo Province, began commercial operations on November 13, 2024, and has since been supplying electricity to the national grid.
The facility has a generation capacity of five megawatts and operates two units, each producing 2.5MW of power.
According to Parliament, the plant has been delivering reliable renewable energy for the past 18 months, helping to support electricity supply requirements while reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.

“The 5MW plant started commercial operations on 13 November 2024 and has been feeding clean, reliable power into the national grid for 18 months,” Parliament added.
The legislative body noted that electricity generated by the plant is transmitted through a 25-kilometre power line to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).
“It runs two 2.5MW units and sends electricity via a 25km line to ZETDC,” Parliament said.
Members of the committee praised the project’s contribution to the country’s energy mix and its alignment with government efforts to increase investment in renewable energy infrastructure.
“The committee commended the project for strengthening Zimbabwe’s energy security and supporting sustainable national development,” Parliament said.
The government has been promoting renewable energy projects as part of efforts to address electricity shortages, diversify energy sources and support economic growth.
Hydropower, solar and other renewable technologies have increasingly become central to the country’s long-term energy strategy.
The Great Zimbabwe Hydro Power Plant is among several independent power projects expected to contribute to improved electricity generation and support industrial, commercial and domestic energy.
