The Ministry of Health and Child Care says Gweru Provincial Hospital has launched a week-long Orthopedic Trauma Camp aimed at reducing a growing surgical backlog.

The programme also aims at improving access to specialist treatment for trauma patients in the Midlands province.

The ministry said the initiative is being led by orthopedic specialist Brian Paketh and is expected to deliver at least 30 major surgeries during the intensive surgical programme.

“Gweru Provincial Hospital has launched a week-long Orthopedic Trauma Camp to clear its surgical backlog,” the ministry said.

“Under Brian Paketh, the team is completing at least 30 major surgeries, providing critical relief for trauma survivors across the Midlands.”

“The trauma camp is part of efforts to enhance specialist healthcare delivery and reduce waiting times for patients requiring orthopedic procedures following road traffic accidents, workplace injuries and other trauma-related conditions,” the statement read.

According to the ministry, the increasing demand for orthopedic services has placed pressure on public health institutions, making targeted surgical programmes necessary to address accumulated cases.

“To stay ahead of demand, the hospital now aims to transition these specialised blitzes into a quarterly initiative,” the Ministry said.
