THE Mundi-Mataga Dam is rapidly becoming a catalyst for rural transformation, driving irrigation, fisheries, tourism growth and improved livelihoods for communities in the Mberengwa district.

The dam is now delivering visible socio-economic benefits, with residents describing it as a powerful empowerment hub that is helping them adapt to climate change.

They also said the dam project is proving essential in building resilient rural economies and advancing broad-based development.

Local groups said the project has boosted inclusive participation, with women, youth and war veterans all actively involved in income-generating initiatives such as fisheries and irrigation schemes.

“Even in fisheries, we have various groups that consist of war veterans, women, and youth who are benefiting,” Nicholas Nyatanga, a resident, noted.

Other beneficiaries also believe the development reflects the national thrust toward equitable growth.

“No one is being left behind. We are happy that projects are happening in our own Mberengwa,” said a resident, Gloria Mutizwa.

Locals said the dam is opening new tourism opportunities, with boating, fishing and other recreational activities expected to attract private investment.

“What the government has done is commendable and what we now need is to boost tourism by attracting investors,” Mutizwa added.

As Zimbabwe continues expanding its dam infrastructure, projects like Mundi-Mataga are proving essential in building resilient rural economies and advancing the country’s Vision 2030 target of broad-based development.
