Gweru City Council has given illegal push cart operators until Sunday to regularise their operations to avoid confiscation of their equipment.

The local authority expressed concern on the proliferation of push carts causing an eyesore in the central business district.

It said the pushcart operators were causing congestion and unfair disadvantage to those licensed and plying their trade in designated spaces.

“All unlicensed push carts are being removed and confiscated as a way of returning sanity in the city,” council said.

“Push cart operators are urged to license their push carts with the local authority.”

The operation will run until May 10.

Gweru Informal Traders and Hawkers Association chairperson, Lovemore Tingaka, urged the operators to comply with council by laws to help create order in the city.

“Surely if there are other licensed push cart operators doing their business in designated areas there cannot be exceptions,” he said.

Over the years, stakeholders have expressed concern on the obstruction of vehicles and pedestrians as well as sanitation challenges particularly in the CBD posed by illegal push carts.
