TelOne FC have begun an extensive search for a new head coach after parting ways with Herbert Maruwa, with club leadership indicating they will adopt a data-driven, “scientific” approach — including the use of AI tools — to identify the right candidate.
Maruwa’s departure follows a difficult start to the season that has left the Gweru-based side rooted in the relegation zone.
The Wifi Boys sit 16th on the log with just three points from nine matches, a run that has intensified pressure within the camp and sparked urgent calls for change.
The former Dynamos and Black Rhinos coach had come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks, particularly after a 1-0 home defeat to Herentals — TelOne’s fifth loss at home this season — which appeared to seal his fate.
Club president Oscah Nduwure confirmed that the two parties had mutually agreed not to extend Maruwa’s contract, which is due to expire next month.
“He still has a running contract with the club, which was due for renewal subject to performance-related appraisals, but we had a meeting and agreed not to renew when it expires,” said Nduwure.

In the interim, assistant coach Charles Mutero has been tasked with steadying the team as the club navigates a critical phase of the campaign.
The vacancy has already attracted significant interest, with at least 15 coaches understood to have submitted applications.
Among those linked to the post are Mkhuphali Masuku, Rodwell Dhlakama, Saul Chaminuka, Paul Chimalizeni, and Mark Mathe.
However, seasoned tacticians Luke Masomere and Wilson Mtekede are reportedly emerging as leading contenders.
Nduwure stressed that the club is taking a measured approach in selecting Maruwa’s successor, prioritising a candidate capable of guiding the team out of danger.
“We are taking our time because we want a coach who understands the terrain we are in. This process will be informed by a scientific approach, including the use of AI tools, to ensure we make the right decision,” he said.
TelOne’s situation reflects a broader trend in the domestic league, where clubs battling poor form are beginning to reshuffle technical benches in a bid to avoid relegation.
For the Wifi Boys, the focus now shifts to survival — and finding a coach who can quickly turn their fortunes around before the season slips beyond reach.
