Gweru City Council has introduced membership-based swimming clubs and youth centres aimed at promoting fitness, talent development and life skills among residents.
In a statement, council said both youths and adults can register for the programmes at a fee of US$3, with a monthly subscription of US$5.
“Gweru City Council invites youths and adults to register as members of its swimming clubs at Mambo, Town and Mkoba pools,” the council said.
“Whether you are a beginner or an experienced swimmer, this is an opportunity to improve your skills, enhance fitness and participate in organised activities.”
Residents can register at their preferred swimming pool.
Council also encouraged registration at its youth centres, including Ndlovu in Mtapa, Mambo Youth Centre, Ingwe in Senga and Chipembere Youth Centre at Mkoba Hall.

Activities at the centres include arts, music, sport, cultural programmes and life skills training.
“These centres provide a safe and empowering environment for talent development, creativity, recreation and personal growth,” council said.
The initiative has been welcomed by residents, who say it could help curb drug and substance abuse among youths.
“This is a positive development because many young people were idle and turning to drugs,” said Ascot resident James Chiseko.
However, some residents raised concerns over affordability.
“The US$3 registration fee is reasonable, but the US$5 monthly subscription may be too high for many youths. It could be reduced to around US$2 or US$3,” said Constance Mariko.
Others urged council to ensure safety at swimming facilities and to employ qualified personnel to deliver meaningful training at the centres.
