District medical director, Dr Matthew Mthunzi, told Southern Eye that the ministry is implementing three major projects in the district: the completion of Kezi Rural Hospital, the refurbishment of the nursing school, and upgrades at Maphisa District Hospital.

Mthunzi said the reopening of the nursing school would significantly boost human resources for health across the country.

Mthunzi said the reopening of the nursing school would significantly boost human resources for health across the country.

“We expect to enrol between 40 and 50 students, although some may need to use local accommodation as the hospital can only accommodate 39 students,” he said.

The nursing school is expected to be commissioned during the Independence celebrations, with the first intake anticipated in the second quarter of the year.

Mthunzi also said construction of new structures at Kezi Hospital was undertaken after authorities realised that existing buildings, constructed during the colonial era, were no longer structurally safe.

He revealed that the hospital is expecting to receive an additional ambulance to complement its fleet, following the completion of the necessary administrative processes.

The district medical director also appealed for the construction of a perimeter fence at Maphisa Hospital to enhance security.

Meanwhile, the director of Growly Construction Company, Joseph Mthiyeni, said that in addition to upgrading the building infrastructure, the company had installed a new sewer system — an issue that had long posed challenges at the facility.

The company is responsible for refurbishing Kezi Hospital.
