The Bulawayo City Council health inspectorate recently conducted over 1 800 inspections of city businesses and issued 32 tickets to shops found selling condemned food.

This is revealed in the latest council report on the health inspectorate.

According to the minutes,  health services director, Edwin Mzingwane Sibanda, reported that the start of the new year was a busy period for the section, with continued renewal of registration certificates and processing of new shop licence applications.

“A total of 1 868 inspections were conducted for various purposes, including routine monitoring for compliance, shop licence inspections, non-trading premises inspections, renewal of registration certificates, health reports and domiciliary visits,” reads the report.

“Non-compliant premises were issued with intimations and deposit fines. There were also condemnations of unwholesome food.”

The council said a total of 21 intimations were issued, and 32 tickets were issued for various offences.

The health inspectorate condemned several food products found in supermarkets around the city, including Active Nutri Smart Instant Porridge, Cashel Valley baked beans, Shumba Maheu, Koo baked beans, Koo Chakalala, Sama Thwala Shop tinned beans, Sip Sip Maheu, The Sausage Factory polony, Tomco baked beans, and beef, among others.

A total of 10 complaints were received and attended to, including noise pollution, public nuisance, waste heaped in yards, and flies and odour nuisances emanating from a chicken run and open dumping of waste.

“An intimation was issued and [the offender] was given seven days to remove the bottles,” reads the report.

The council also said 155 applications for trading permits were received and processed.

Sibanda reported that 12 premises were swabbed during the month.

Results for four of the premises had been received, and they were all unsatisfactory.
