MILTON High School in Bulawayo prides itself on both academic and sporting achievements, having posted very good results of late.

The school achieved an Advanced Level pass rate of 88.9% last year, rising from 83.9%—the best-ever improvement over a period spanning 30 years.

“Several subjects including Heritage Studies, Literature in English, Literature in Ndebele, Family and Religious Studies (FARS), Sports Science, Crop Science, Physical Education and Sports Management and Development (PESMD) posted a 100% pass rate.

“The aim now is to improve the quality of the passes,” the school said.

The school, however, saw a drop in Ordinary Level passes from 35% to 33%, with Heritage Studies, English Language, Geography, History and Combined Science emerging as the best-performing subjects.

One of the learners Adesto Nawira emerged as one of the top performers after attaining seven As and above, scoring straight As in Mathematics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English Language, Heritage Studies and History, with a B in Ndebele Language.

In sport, the institution took note of Aleck Vhovha, a high jumper, who scooped gold last year in the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) championships while he was in Form 4.

He proceeded to Botswana where he broke the regional record, clearing 2.10 metres in the Under-20 High Jump competition.

He then attended another athletics meet in South Africa where he cleared 2.12 metres and came second to Nyelele Katleho of the University of Johannesburg, who cleared 2.15 metres.

Last week, Brighton Mpofu came second in the Under-19 National Junior Championships in squash and is ranked second in that category nationally after Brett Raynars.
