A 27-year-old man was arrested after he was shot during an alleged illegal mining incident at Sabi Gold Mine in Zvishavane last Sunday.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the arrest of Silent Muvadi, who was reportedly part of a group that invaded the mine to prospect for gold unlawfully.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Silent Muvadi, aged 27, in connection with a shooting incident at Sabi Mining site in Zvishavane’s Runde Constituency. The suspect was part of a group that invaded the mine on February 8, 2026, allegedly to prospect for gold illegally,” said Mahoko.
According to police, the incident occurred around 9am when mine security guards approached the group intending to effect arrests.
“It is alleged that the group fled upon being confronted. However, Muvadi reportedly charged towards the guards while wielding a chisel,” Mahoko said.
One of the armed security guards allegedly fired a single shot, striking Muvadi in the thigh.

“The suspect was subdued, arrested and handed over to ZRP Zvishavane. He sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and was referred to Zvishavane District Hospital for treatment,” Mahoko said.
Police indicated that investigations are underway and a docket is being prepared. Muvadi and his accomplices are expected to face trespassing charges.
Mahoko urged members of the public to refrain from resisting lawful arrest and advised those interested in mining activities to formally engage the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.
