POLICE in Bulawayo are investigating a road traffic accident that occurred on Wednesday evening, which resulted in two fatalities and 12 injuries.
The accident occurred on 6th Avenue between Herbert Chitepo Street and Lobengula Street.
Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele identified the deceased as Christopher Mukuwapasi, a man believed to be in his late 30s and Lizwe Ncube, a 30-year-old man from Cowdray Park, Bulawayo.
“On January 28, at around 8:16pm, a 28-year-old man from Emakhandeni, Bulawayo, was driving a Toyota Hiace kombi along 6th Avenue with 18 passengers on board,” Msebele said.
“He lost control of the vehicle, swerved to the left and struck 14 people who were either standing near the road or walking close to OK Godini supermarket.
“The vehicle then hit the supermarket’s wall before coming to a stop.”

Msebele stated that two people died at the scene and were taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post-mortem.
Twelve others sustained various injuries and were taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment.
“The accident was caused by speeding and the driver’s failure to keep a proper lookout.
“Consequently, a charge of culpable homicide has been brought against him.
“We urge all drivers to exercise extra caution, maintain vigilance for pedestrians at all times, and avoid speeding, especially in areas with high pedestrian traffic.
