Police have launched a manhunt for armed robbers who broke into an EcoCash booth in Emganwini and made off with mobile phone recharge cards US$587 and US$2,000 cash on Monday.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.
“On July 13 at around 0745 am, the complainant, a female adult aged 21 years of Nkulumane, Bulawayo, a cashier at an Ecocash booth in Emganwini, Bulawayo, which is housed in the butchery, reported at work and found the butchery already opened,’’ Msebele said.
“Upon entering, she found one of the accused persons who was wearing a balaclava pointing a firearm at the butchery attendant and ordering her not to move.’’
According to police, the other accused person who was also wearing a balaclava entered the butchery and closed the door from inside.
“He approached the complainant and forcibly took her handbag, took out airtime recharge cards valued at US$587 and cash amounting to US$2 000 and went away. The total value stolen is US$2,587 and nothing was recovered,” said Msebele.

She urged business owners, especially those handling cash, to strengthen security by banking money regularly, installing CCTV cameras and alarms, and avoid opening or closing premises alone.
