HARARE, Mar. 24 (NewsDay Live) – Zimbabwe’s tobacco regulator has called for stricter ethical standards across the industry as the 2026 marketing season records a strong surge in sales.
Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) chief executive Emmanuel Matsvaire said fairness, transparency and accountability must anchor the sector’s growth.
“Ethical conduct is no longer optional; it is fundamental to sustainability, market access and long-term growth,” he said at the opening of Ethical Leaf Tobacco auction floors in Harare.
The new sales floor, launched alongside the company’s 10th anniversary, signals growing investment and competition in tobacco marketing.
Matsvaire said TIMB is focused on protecting farmers, promoting fair trade and aligning Zimbabwe’s tobacco with global standards on traceability, labour and environmental practices.
The push comes as the marketing season gathers momentum.

By day 13, tobacco sales had reached 34,75 million kilogrammes — a 62% jump from the same period last year — generating over US$98 million, up 32%.
Auction floors are also seeing increased activity, with more than 21 000 bales already sold, reflecting strong demand.
Matsvaire said facilities such as Ethical Leaf Tobacco will improve transparency and efficiency in the marketing system.
More players in the sector are expected to boost competition and help secure better prices for farmers.
