Andy Burnham has officially become UK prime minister after a meeting with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.

A photograph released from the meeting shows Burnham wearing a dark suit and tie standing alongside the King.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said that the King met with Burnham and “requested him to form a new Administration.”

Burnham “accepted The King’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury,” the statement said, adding that Burnham’s wife Marie-France van Heel was also at the meeting.
