HARARE, Jul. 21 (NewsDay Live) – Mutapa Gold Resources has secured international accreditation for its assay laboratory at Freda Rebecca Mine, a move expected to reduce exploration costs, speed up operational decision-making and enhance investor confidence by improving the accuracy and reliability of geological data.
The company has attained ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for its testing and calibration laboratory, an internationally recognised standard that certifies the technical competence of laboratories and the reliability of their testing processes.
For mining companies, assay results underpin virtually every stage of the value chain. They determine ore grades, guide exploration programmes, shape resource estimates, influence mine planning and ultimately affect the value of mineral assets. Even small inaccuracies can have significant financial consequences.
Mutapa Gold Resources chief executive Patrick Shayawabaya said the accreditation would improve confidence in the quality, traceability and precision of assay results generated at Freda Rebecca.
“In our industry, assay results are not just numbers on a report. They inform exploration decisions, guide resource evaluation, influence grade control, support mine planning and determine plant performance,” Shayawabaya said.
“Accuracy is therefore not optional. Precision is not a luxury. Reliability is central to the way we mine, process, account for and sell gold.”

The accreditation comes as Mutapa intensifies exploration at Freda Rebecca to expand its resource base and improve production performance.
An accredited in-house laboratory is expected to reduce dependence on external testing facilities, lowering analytical costs while shortening turnaround times for exploration and production decisions.
“With the aggressive exploration drive that we are on, this certification will enable us to better manage and reduce our exploration costs,” Shayawabaya said.
“External laboratories will always continue to play an important role where independent verification is required, but generally an accredited internal laboratory improves efficiency.”
The investment reflects a broader shift across the global mining industry towards data-driven operations, where high-quality geological information has become a strategic asset. Reliable assay data helps miners deploy exploration capital more effectively, optimise mine plans and improve processing efficiency, while reducing the risk of costly resource estimation errors.
Mutapa said the accreditation confirms that Freda Rebecca’s laboratory meets internationally recognised standards for technical competence, quality management and testing reliability.
The company views the achievement as part of a broader operational transformation programme aimed at strengthening Freda Rebecca’s competitiveness.
“This accreditation is not only a laboratory achievement. It is a Mutapa Gold Resources achievement,” Shayawabaya said.
“We are not building ordinary mining operations. We are building disciplined, data-driven, internationally credible operations that can compete beyond our borders.”
The development comes as Zimbabwe seeks to attract fresh mining investment by improving operational standards, governance and transparency.
Gold remains Zimbabwe’s largest mineral export and a key source of foreign currency. However, investors have consistently identified operational efficiency, policy consistency and the quality of technical information as critical factors when assessing mining opportunities.
Mutapa believes strengthening its internal technical systems will improve confidence in the data supporting the valuation of its mineral assets and future expansion plans.
Shayawabaya said the accreditation followed years of investment in technology, systems, skills development and quality management.
“The journey required discipline, investment and persistence,” he said.
Industry analysts say internationally accredited laboratories are increasingly becoming a competitive advantage, particularly for companies seeking project financing or partnerships with global investors. Reliable assay systems provide greater assurance over mineral resource estimates, helping de-risk exploration and development projects.
For Freda Rebecca, one of Zimbabwe’s oldest gold mines, the accreditation marks another step in Mutapa Gold Resources’ efforts to modernise operations under the state-owned investment company, shifting the focus beyond increasing output to strengthening the technical systems that support sustainable, efficient mining.
