HIGHLANDERS is the most supported team in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League at the moment after attracting the highest number of fans this season.

Despite their slow start to the current campaign, Bosso have outshone their bitter rivals Dynamos, who have attracted very few fans at their home matches since the local top-flight resumed after the Covid-19 enforced break.

Since the league’s resumption after the Afcon finals, Highlanders have been the biggest crowd pullers in the country, with 2 500 fans attending their home 2-0 win over WhaWha on February 20 and the 4-0 drubbing of visiting Herentals last week.

Information gathered from the Bulawayo giants is that a rounded figure of 2100 fans attended the WhaWha tie and 300 more pitched up at Barbourfields Stadium for the game against The Students.

In contrast their rivals Dynamos have been battling poor attendances at their home matches, a development which is set to revive the age old debate on which is the most supported team in the country.

Due to the closure of Rufaro, DeMbare has been using the National Sports Stadium as their home ground.

The National Sports Stadium is allowed to carry around 18 000 fans under the current Covid-19 regulations, but a small fraction of that has been attending DeMbare’s home matches.

Low turnout at PSL matches is not confined to Dynamos matches alone. The scripts of their rivals Caps United and FC Platinum, in that regard, read the same.

Only 800 fans attended CAPS’ goalless draw with Ngezi Platinum Stars at the National Sports Stadium, and that is the largest crowd attracted by Lloyd Chitembwe’s men this campaign.

Only 600 fans witnessed their 6-0 demolition of hapless WhaWha at the giant facility two weeks ago.

Champions FC Platinum have also recorded very low numbers for their two home matches this year with their game against big crowd pullers Dynamos on February 19 bringing in only 887 fans.

Meanwhile, a big crowd is expected at the National Sports Stadium today when Caps United host Highlanders.

The demand for Covid-19 vaccination certificates has been cited as one of the reasons why some fans are no longer coming to the stadia. Others have complained about the lack of adequate transport, with Zupco struggling to meet demands and commuters having to wait long hours for transport.
