The Zimbabwean event industry has long been a tale of two extremes. On one side, you have high-end hospitality that often feels sterile or disconnected from security realities.
On the other, you have "muscle-heavy" security that, while effective at crowd control, often lacks the finesse and welcoming spirit required for a premium experience.
However, after sitting down with Knowledge Tirivanhu, the Managing Director of an award-winning company called Beyond Excellence Events Staffing, it is clear that a third way is emerging one that treats safety as a service and hospitality as a meticulous discipline.
For too long, event security in Harare has been synonymous with intimidation.
We have grown accustomed to the "bouncer" archetype imposing figures whose primary role is to keep people out or react to trouble.
What Beyond Excellence is doing is fundamentally different. By leveraging a background in defence and national security, Tirivanhu has infused a professional, tactical intelligence into the hospitality space.
When a staff member is trained to not only watch the door but also track a guest's misplaced belongings or manage a VIP's movement through a room, the "security" becomes invisible.
It transitions from being a barrier to being a facilitator. This is the international standard we see at global galas, and it is refreshing to see it rooted firmly in Zimbabwe.

The company's philosophy, established in 2016, centres on a top-notch experience that goes beyond the basic requirements of an event contract.
In our conversation, Tirivanhu touched on a critical point the industry was missing a professional and experienced core.
It is not enough to just have people standing at a door with a guest list. True excellence in this sector requires a blend of integrity and versatility being able to pivot from an intimate corporate launch to high-octane events like the Rick Ross Gala or Zim Hip Hop Awards.
It has also covered prominent events such as the Ama2k-Fest, which brought Ruger and Scotts Maphuma, the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup Zimbabwe and Namibia 2026.
Expanding the Zimbabwean brand of hospitality into the SADC region is proving that our local talent can compete in Johannesburg, Lusaka, and beyond.
By exporting these services to Zambia and South Africa, firms like Beyond Excellence are showing that Zimbabwe is not just a venue for regional events, but a provider of the professional infrastructure that makes those events possible.
As the event industry in Zimbabwe continues to grow, with more international tours and high-stakes summits on the horizon, the "Beyond Excellence" model should be the blueprint.
We should no longer settle for "good enough" staffing.
The future of our hospitality sector relies on leaders who understand that security and service are two sides of the same coin.
If we want to host the world, we need to ensure that every guest — whether at a stadium concert or a private gala — feels both profoundly safe and exceptionally welcomed.
That, truly, is going beyond excellence.
