Deputy Local Government minister Sesel Zvidzai yesterday disclosed that the MDC-T had submitted the names of its corrupt councillors to the police and the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for further investigations.
Report by Moses Matenga Zvidzai, who is also MDC-T local government secretary said party secretary-general Tendai Biti had informed the police and the ZACC to investigate and have the culprits prosecuted.
“The party’s secretary-general (Tendai Biti) has written to the police and those people (police) should stand up and do the noble thing of investigating and arresting the culprits,” he said.
A senior ZACC official could neither deny nor confirm receiving the correspondence, but indicated they were following the developments with keen interest.
However, no comment could be obtained from police spokesperson Oliver Mandipaka as his phone went unanswered yesterday.
Zvidzai said: “If they claim to be councillors of integrity, they should resign and seek re-election using their own names. You can’t ride on (Prime Minister Morgan) Tsvangirai’s name, tarnish the name of his party and keep claiming that you have the mandate of the people when, in fact, you don’t have the mandate. Our investigations involved the civic society groups, residents and people on the streets who gave us information and these are the people who, if they feel no justice is being taken, should effect citizen’s arrest on these people.”
The affected councillors are from Harare, Gweru, Kwekwe and Zvishavane. Two months ago, the MDC-T expelled 12 councillors and cautioned 13 others after they were fingered in graft activities across the country.
