UK appoints Gill Lever as new ambassador to Zimbabwe

Local News

HARARE, Aug. 4 (NewsDay Live) – The United Kingdom has appointed career diplomat Gill Lever OBE as its next ambassador to Zimbabwe, succeeding Peter Vowles, who is taking up another diplomatic posting.

In a statement on Tuesday, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said Lever will assume her new role in September.

Lever is currently the British Deputy High Commissioner in Nigeria, a position she has held since 2023. Her diplomatic career has included postings in South Sudan, Japan, India, Romania and Vietnam, as well as several senior roles at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in London.

She takes over at a time when the UK and Zimbabwe continue efforts to deepen bilateral engagement following years of strained relations. Peter Vowles has served as Britain’s ambassador to Zimbabwe since 2023.
