HARARE, Jul. 21 (NewsDay Live) – The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has temporarily restricted public access to the Victoria Falls rainforest following reports of an elephant in the area.
In a public notice issued on Monday, ZimParks said the precautionary measure was aimed at protecting visitors, staff and wildlife while minimising the risk of human-wildlife conflict.
“The restriction has been instituted as a precautionary measure to safeguard visitors, staff, and wildlife, and to reduce the risk of human-wildlife conflict. ZimParks teams are closely monitoring the situation and will advise the public once it is safe to reopen access to the site,” the authority said.
ZimParks urged members of the public to comply with the temporary restrictions and warned against entering the affected area, approaching the elephant or interfering with wildlife management operations.
Victoria Falls, one of Zimbabwe’s premier tourist destinations, borders a vast wildlife habitat where elephants frequently move between protected areas, residential neighbourhoods and tourism facilities.
The authority said it would provide updates once the area is deemed safe for public access.
