ESIGODINI, Jul 13, (Newsday Live)- A 30-year-old Esigodini man, Tandazani Mpofu, has been sentenced to an effective five years in prison for brutally attacking a fellow villager, leaving him permanently disabled.

Mpofu was found guilty of attempting to kill Vusani Nhliziyo (36) at Portbury Business Centre on November 8, 2022.

The court heard that Mpofu, acting together with accomplices, attacked Nhliziyo as he walked home.

They attacked him with axes, knobkerries and a hammer before Mpofu cut off the victim's left foot with a knife and repeatedly stabbed him.

Following the attack, they dumped him in a nearby bush and fled the scene.

Prosecutors said the victim sustained life-threatening injuries that ultimately led to the amputation of both legs.

The court also heard that one of Mpofu's co-accused, Limukani Privilege Sibindi, was convicted in 2025 and sentenced to an effective five years' imprisonment over the same charge.

The third suspect, Anthen Ndlovu, remains at large.
