ONLY 1,2km of the 66km Gwanda-Maphisa Road project is complete as contractors race against time to finish the project ahead of this year’s Independence Day commemorations.
The project, one of the major independence celebrations legacy projects in Matabeleland South province, has seen six contractors engaged to speed up construction.
So far, the 1,2km Kononkwe stretch has been completed.
Special adviser to the President on Monitoring Implementation of Government Programmes, Joram Gumbo, who on Wednesday toured the project together with the Transport and Infrastructural Development minister, Felix Mhona, pledged to push for the swift release of funding for outstanding work.
“This is part of the independence legacy projects and for a long time, no work had been done on this road. When we see this progress, we are happy,” he said.
“We will push Treasury to expedite the release of funds so that by yea-end the project is complete. With the number of contractors on site, we are convinced it will be finished.”
Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Albert Nguluvhe said the completion of the 66km road would stand as a lasting reminder of equitable infrastructure development.
“This road is crucial for Matabeleland South’s economic development. We are happy that work is ongoing,” he said.

Provincial roads engineer Mangisi Nkomo said six contractors were on site for the 66km Gwanda-Maphisa Road.
“Works are at various stages,” Nkomo said.
The road is part of a wider package of independence legacy projects, which include the Bulawayo-Kezi Highway, the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Vocational Training Centre, Filabusi Registry, 40 village business units across Matobo and 40 science and computer laboratories across the province.
