HARARE, Mar. 11 (NewsDay Live) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed veteran politician Didymus Mutasa to the ZANU–PF Elders Council, reviving a political career that had largely remained dormant since the fall of former leader Robert Mugabe.
The announcement was made Wednesday by Zanu PF secretary for information and publicity Christopher Mutsvangwa.
Mnangagwa also serves as the ruling party’s First Secretary.
Mutasa’s appointment marks a return to party structures after years on the sidelines following his fallout with Mugabe’s administration during the factional battles that preceded the late leader’s removal from power in 2017.
Before his political eclipse, Mutasa served as Minister of State for National Security in the President’s Office and was also Zanu PF secretary for administration — one of the party’s most influential posts.
The Zanu PF Elders Council is a consultative body made up of senior and long-serving party members tasked with providing strategic guidance and institutional memory to the ruling party’s leadership.
The body was created to bring experienced party stalwarts into advisory roles and help preserve the party’s ideological direction and internal cohesion.
