20% vote in ‘sham’ polls

AN average 20% of registered voters in eight constituencies where by-elections were held over the weekend turned out at polling stations, statistics provided by the Election Resource Centre (ERC) yesterday show, as voter apathy hits the polls.

The election, occasioned by self-imposed Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) interim secretary-general who recalled nine legislators, largely turned out to be a farce after 12% of voters turned out in Bulawayo South, for instance. In Lobengula-Magwegwe 13,4% of registered voters turned up, while 14,1% cast their ballots in Cowdray Park and 14,3% of registered voters participating in Nketa, according to ERC.
