BY MAGRETH RUZVIDZO NABA Volleyball Club are targeting podium finish in the rescheduled FISD Mzuzu Volleyball tournament to be played in Malawi next week.

The tournament was originally slated for August 5 to 7 before being pushed back to August 12 to August 14 after one of the participating clubs, Mbeya Best VI from Tanzania, requested a shift on dates because of their involvement in their domestic league.

NABA, together with Harare City, were awarded the slots in this tournament by virtue of being the Zimbabwe men’s and women’s reigning champions, respectively.

NABA secretary-general Blessing Chimanga said they were now fine-tuning their preparations.

“Our preparations are at an advanced level both on and off the court. Our players are geared up for the challenge and the boys are working hard with the coaches on various tactical aspects of the game to attain gold at the tournament,” he said.

“We are looking forward to winning gold at the tournament and putting a smile on the faces of our supporters. The team is addicted to winning, as shown by our unbeatable season in 2021 season, hence we look forward to bringing gold back home. We lost one of our key players to Lions Volleyball Club in South Africa and that led to a slow start to the season by the boys, but we are encouraged by the recent run of form as the coach has restrategised to get the winning formula back by winning the Shalom Open Tournament that was held in Victoria Falls recently.”

Chamanga said the team had been giving special attention to critical aspects of the game and he also appealed to the corporate world and well-wishers for sponsorship.

“The coaches and the boys have been working on our block, out of system, and floor defence coverage. We have been in the system over the years now but this season the boys have had a challenge with out of system and floor defence hence the focus by the coaches and the boys to turn the weakness into strength,” he said.

“Last year at the African Club Championships Zone Six games held in Mozambique, the team managed to get the silver medal and we hope to build on that momentum to win the Mzuzu International Volleyball Tournament.”

“We expect to leave the country on the 10th of August for the tournament. We are appealing to the corporate world and well-wishers to come and assist us to participate in the tournament.”
