Phiri played for Highlanders as a right-back before he moved to South Africa to join Bidvest Wits in 2020, but the club’s franchise was sold to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila and he was released.

BY FORTUNE MBELE BULAWAYO Chiefs have brought on board utility player McClive Phiri as they plot to step up their Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign in the second half of the season.

Chiefs confirmed Phiri’s signing on social media.

“New Ninja alert dear world, we introduce to you McClive Phiri, utility player,” Bulawayo Chiefs said.

Phiri played for Highlanders as a right-back before he moved to South Africa to join Bidvest Wits in 2020, but the club’s franchise was sold to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila and he was released.

Chiefs parted ways with defender Ian Nekati and Phiri could come in handy in that position for the Bulawayo outfit who were due to announce another signing yesterday.

Chiefs striker Obriel Chirinda welcomed Phiri to the side.

“Skippy, can’t wait for those crosses,” Chirinda said.

Former Highlanders chief executive Nhlanhla Dube said he was excited for Phiri, who tried his luck at Bosso without success.

“(It’s) Great to see him finding a home for his football. All the best for the player and club,” Dube said.

After he was released by Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivandila, Phiri joined Sekhukhune United where he did not stay long and moved to lower division side Venda.

He was also shown the exit door and decided to pack his bags and return home.

All has not been rosy for the Ninjas in the second half of the season in which they have won only one match in six games, drawing one and losing four.

They sit 10th on the log-table, with 29 points from 23 games with seven wins, eight draws and eight defeats.
