BY STAFF REPORTER CHIMANIMANI FM goes live today, with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) saying the “existence of community media is one of the indications of media growth”.
The radio station is part of the World Bank-funded Zimbabwe Idai Recovery Project (ZIRP) co-ordinated by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
“Participation by Unesco in this community radio shows its dedication to the growth of pluralistic media, which is a term commonly used to refer to free, independent, and a broad range of media organizations that reflect various groups in society,” a statement by Unesco reads in part.
“Honourable Monica Mutsvangwa, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, and professor Lidia Arthur Brito, regional director and representative of Unesco Regional Office for Southern Africa (Unesco ROSA) will jointly launch Chimanimani FM.”
The radio station will be launched at Chimanimani FM premises with a public event at The Village Green.
“Unesco ROSA is supporting the establishment of community radio stations as trustworthy sources of early warning communication against floods and drought in Chimanimani, Nyanga, and Chipinge in Manicaland province in partnership and collaboration with the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services,” Unesco said.
“Unesco will donate 100 solar powered radios to selected local schools in Chimanimani for radio lessons as well as schools in Chipinge, Nyanga, and Chiredzi. Unesco will embark on training local radio operators in Chimanimani, Chipinge, Nyanga, and Chiredzi on how to mobilise their communities against gender-based violence and ending early child marriages.”
Cycline Idai was declared a state of disaster by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
