AfriKera Arts Trust set to host Dzorera dance workshop

In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, AfriKera Arts Trust founder Marie-Laurie Soukaina said Dzorera workshops and master classes feature dance instructors and choreographers from the continent and beyond.

BY CHIEDZA MAZHANGARA AFRIKERA Arts Trust today hosts a dance workshop titled Dzorera facilitated by Rujeko Dumbutshena.

In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, AfriKera Arts Trust founder Marie-Laurie Soukaina said Dzorera workshops and master classes feature dance instructors and choreographers from the continent and beyond.

“The Dzorera event in question is a master class facilitated by Rujeko Dumbutshena, a Zimbabwean associate professor at the University of Florida.

“The main aim is to expose the students of the three-year professional dance training to international instructors and variety of dance techniques and training, as well as dances from other cultures

“This particular master class will focus on traditional dance from Guinéa and Congo,” she said.

Soukaina pointed out that the workshop was mandatory for all students in training and as well the AfriKera family which includes the instructors, graduates and was also open for the dance lovers from the audience.

She added that as a dance hub, they have also been participating in other festivals both in and outside Zimbabwe and is positive that the workshop will benefit participants and the country at large.

Dumbutshena is a dance pedagogue who also specialises in neo-traditional and Afro-contemporary dance.

She is also part of the Afro Feminist Performance Routes, a cohort of black female dance artists from around the world.

AfriKera Arts Trust was founded in 2014 and its main mission is to promote dance and performing arts through various programmes such as the AfriKera Professional Dance Training (APDT), a three-year professional dance training programme.

The programme targets mainly the youth from low-income households.

Africa Dance Theatre, Essence of Women Dance Ensemble and African Collective are also some of the programmes undertaken by the trust to promote dance.
