RANL to take a break

THE Rainbow Amateur Netball League (RANL) will take a two-week break after this weekend’s round of matches and is set to resume action on July 16.

As the curtains close down for the first half of the season, the last round of the first half will be played tomorrow at three venues — White City, Chitungwiza and Mucheke.

The teams will also use the break to reboot as well as strengthen their squads as the mid-season transfer window will open from today and shut on July 15.

RANL commenced its season in March and the league’s secretary-general Moses Gukurume believes the two weeks break will help the teams to rebuild and regroup ahead of what should be a tough but exciting second half of the season.

“We can say we are happy with the way things have started this year considering that we did not encounter too many interruptions compared to last year where COVID-19 wreaked havoc. This year we started off very well and we managed to play our bubbles,” he said.

“However, there is a lot of room to improve because teams are facing a lot of financial challenges that are brought by the economic situation in the country. We are trying to see how best we can assist our teams so that they fulfil their fixtures and manage to raise the status of the brand to a better level.

“In the second round, we are looking forward to having our teams fulfil all their games and we have one or two tournaments lined up. We didn’t manage to play our Independence Cup due to some challenges beyond our control and we expect to have some tournaments in the second round and at the end of the
season.”

He added: “We expect to fulfil all our games. We expect our teams to up their games in terms of competition and we are expecting a very exciting end to the season in the second round.”

So far, Correctional Queens top the log table unbeaten with 28 points from 14 games.

Glow Petroleum, who are the defending champions and ZRP Mambas are both tied on 26 points, but the former have a better goal difference.
