Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage minister Kazembe Kazembe said the recent spike in GBV cases as well as the human trafficking of women necessitated the establishment of  the call centre.

BY CATHERINE MUCHIRI GOVERNMENT yesterday launched a national sexual and gender-based violence (GBV) call centre in the capital in a bid to fight the scourge.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage minister Kazembe Kazembe said the recent spike in GBV cases as well as the human trafficking of women necessitated the establishment of  the call centre.

“The call centre is set to benefit not only the vulnerable migrant groups, but also other stakeholders such as the investment community, the tourism sector and law enforcement agencies,” he said.

The toll free numbers for the call centre are 08012223/4/5/6.

Speaking at the same event, chief director of immigration Respect Gono said an increase in GBV cases after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns exposed the need for such call centres.

UNDP Zimbabwe resident representative Mia Seppo said: “Two other similar centres have been established, one for the Zimbabwe Republic Police Victim Friendly Unit and the third is for the Legal Aid Directorate under the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs. “
