Potraz calls for consumer protection

Consumers perennially complain of high data tariffs, slow internet connectivity and poor network, among other grievances.

BY MIRIAM MANGWAYA THE Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has implored the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC)  to ensure that   network service providers maintain decent consumer standards.

Speaking during an all-stakeholder meeting hosted by the parastatal in Vumba, Mutare yesterday, Potraz director-general Gift Machengete said: “Consumer protection is key and central to our work as a regulator and operators alike need to keep their consumers happy as part of their broader marketing strategies. CPC is thus a key stakeholder whose attendance of this meeting is highly valued. As the ICT regulator, we believe in collaborative regulation.

“As such, the purpose of this engagement is for us to come together and collectively find solutions to the problems bedevilling the ICT sector. We believe team-work and collaboration divides the task and multiplies the success.”

ICT minister Jenfan Muswere, who was represented by his deputy Dingimuzi Phuti, said there was need for a balance between service affordability and business sustainability for a sustainable communications sector.
