Ranger, cop nabbed for illegal possession of ivory

The three were nabbed following a tip-off on April 4 that they were looking for potential buyers for the ivory.

BY TREVOR MUTSVAIRO   THREE Harare men, including a game ranger and a police officer yesterday appeared before magistrate Babra Mateko charged with illegal possession of 28 kilogrammes of ivory worth $700 000.

Simba Kakomo (38), Shepard Musiniwa (31) and Enerst Kabanda (44) were remanded in custody to April 20 for a trial date.

Kakomo, is a ranger at Hwange National Park while Musiniwa is employed as a police officer stationed at Chikurubi Police camp.

The three were nabbed following a tip-off on April 4 that they were looking for potential buyers for the ivory.

Detectives set a trap pretending to be potential buyers, leading to their arrest.

Thomas Chanakira represented the State.

In an unrelated case, Tatenda Takawira (31), Luckmore Jonasi (42) and Donald Chikwiramakomo (48) appeared before Harare magistrate, Yeukai Dzuda facing fraud charges involving $878  000.

The complainant in the case is Sogecoa Zimbabwe Private Limited represented by Emmanuel Mukwara, a marketing manager.

The accused persons failed to deliver COVID-19 protective gear after receiving payment from the company. They were reported to the police, and later arrested.
