A 33 year old man from Unit L, Chitungwiza has been slapped with a five year jail term by Harare magistrate Ignitio Mhene for destroying railway infrastructure.

Yeukai Cheza is accused of having committed the crime last year.

The complainant in the matter was the National Railways of Zimbabwe represented by Ngwerewe Tavengwa, who is employed as a loss control officer.

The court heard that on December 14, 2021 around 1400 hours, the complainant received information that the accused person was in possession of NRZ property at his workplace.

On the same date, and in the company of a workmate identified as Innocent Zhira, the complainant went to Mbare Magaba at Gregory Magome’s workplace pretending to be scrap buyers.

Tavengwa observed 3 x 1.3 metre railway metal sleepers that were on sale.

Magome then indicated that he got the railway sleepers from Cheza, who was then arrested.

Further police investigations conducted on December 15, 2021 pinpointed that Cheza was the one in possession of the 3 x 1.3 metres railway metal sleepers.

Shepard Makonde appeared for State.
