PSL games shelved for Independence Cup

The PSL spokesperson Kudzai Bare yesterday confirmed that the league will make way for the Uhuru Cup.

BY FORTUNE MBELE THE Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) will this week take a break to make way for the Independence Day Trophy final pitting giants Highlanders and Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium on Monday.

This year’s Independence Day celebrations will be held in Bulawayo where Bosso and Glamour Boys will resume their enduring rivalry.  Last year, Dynamos prevailed, winning 2-0 at the National Sports Stadium.

The PSL spokesperson Kudzai Bare yesterday confirmed that the league will make way for the Uhuru Cup.

“We have a holiday this weekend and we want to focus on the Independence Cup,” Bare said.

The league will resume next weekend with matchday 12 games.

Dynamos last year picked up a US$20 000 cheque for winning the final while Highlanders received $15 000.

Highlanders and Dynamos represent the biggest game in the land, especially in match attendance and the Independence Day Trophy final having free entry, fans are expected to fill Barbourfields to the rafters.

The match will serve as an appetiser for the league clash between the two giants at the same venue in a few weeks’ time.

Dynamos were held to a goalless draw by Ngezi Platinum Stars at Baobab Stadium last Saturday, while Highlanders had to come from behind to force a two-all against visiting Cranborne Bullets at Barbourfields on Sunday.

The PSL has released fixtures for the league programme after the Independence Cup and the Easter holidays.
