Triathlon Zimbabwe team coach Pamela Fulton has said her team gained good experience at the recently held South Africa Junior Championships and Africa Triathlon Junior Cup in Port Elizabeth.
Although most of the athletes didn’t win medals, Fulton is pleased that the event provided a platform for the athletes to improve themselves.
This was an important event that also worked as a selection event for the athletes to qualify for the Africa championships.
“The event went really well. The athletes have thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip and enjoyed swimming and racing in the sea the most — a first experience for most,” said Fulton.
“Our top performing athletes were Emma Lidsba in the women’s category and George Ascott in the men’s category. Emma was 7th placed overall and George 12th.”
Team captain Makanaka Mawere encountered setbacks which affected her performance.
“She (Makanaka) had an outstanding swim but unfortunately had back issues on the bike which slowed her down. She persevered, determined to finish and finished in 9th position,” said Fulton.

However, though some athletes didn’t meet the selection requirements, Fulton said there was a second chance of qualifying for the Africa championships at their flagship event in Troutbeck in Nyanga on April 2.
