BY MAGRETH RUZVIDZO Kudakwashe “Take Money” Chivandire’s coach Clyde Musonda is over the moon following the former’s triumph over Zambia’s Catherine Phiri in the WBC Interim Super bantamweight title fight in Lusaka on Saturday evening.
Take Money became only the second African woman to win the belt and Musonda said that hard work and perserverence paid off for the pugilist.
“I’m extremely happy and I can’t contain my joy right now. Kuda managed to unleash serious punches to her opponent and by the end of the tenth round, Phiri was already disfigured,” said Musonda.
“I believe that this has been a great moment for Kuda, especially after becoming the second female African boxer to grab this title. It is heartwarming and motivating. Moving forward, this will be her greatest stronghold that will give her more courage and confidence in other upcoming matches.”
“Even before our match, especially the day before where we had our weigh in and proved to be more physical and healthier as compared to Catherine. I became confident that that she was definitely going to make it,” he said.
Take Money and her team returned home yesterday to a rousing welcome from boxing fans her family as well as government officials led by deputy minister of sport Tino Machakaire.
Her victory on Saturday is a career defining moment for Chiwandire, who was at the verge of quitting boxing last year, but managed to claim the world title at Phiri’s home ground.
Musonda also thanked all those who helped Take Money during preparations for the fight.

“Many thanks to the government and our sponsors who helped us throughout our camp. Had it not been for their support, surely Kuda would not have managed to bring the title home. The journey was going to be a tough one.”
