BY PAUL VUTETE THE Zimbabwe women hockey team is optimistic of doing well at the Hockey Women World Cup to be hosted by South Africa next month.

The tournament kicks off on April 1 and ends on 12.

Zimbabwe’s best hockey players will be battling for honours in Pool A against Netherlands, Canada and the United States of America.

Zimbabwe Women’s Hockey coach Tendai Maredza told NewsDay Sport yesterday that the team would be departing South Africa on March 27 in order to acclimatise  before facing Canada in their opening match of the campaign.

“Preparations are looking good.

The girls are in high spirits and ready for the tournament. We leave early so we can have an early practice match in South Africa while awaiting the tournament,” Maredza said.

“Every team in the World Cup is a big team which means every game is going to be tough, but we are ready for the challenge.

It is going to be good for us to be participating in this tournament so we are going to take it one game at a time, ” he said.

Maredza revealed to NewsDay Sport that the team does not have a complicated game plan and will try to be the first ever Zimbabwean hockey team to progress from the group stages to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

“We just have one goal for now which is to try and progress from the group stages into the quarter finals which would be the first for Zimbabwe, but we are going to give it our best.”
