ALL is set for the National Open Athletics Championships to be held at the National Sports Stadium B Arena in Harare this morning.
National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president Tendai Tagara said they were aiming to push athletes towards achieving set qualification time for the forthcoming World Championships.
For these Open Championships, Tagara revealed that the JM Busha 54 Races One Mile Challenge would be one of the main events, with enticing prizes set to be won.
“All is set for the National Open Championships. Everything is now in place. The focus will be the JM Busha 54 Races One Mile Challenge. For this one, there is challenge prize for those who are within time in both the male and female categories,” he said.
“The are also consolation prizes for those who fail to be in the set time. The objective is to push athletes to achieve set time which move towards qualifying for the world championships.
“To us, this isn’t just a matter of giving out prizes. We have a target for our athletes as we prepare for forthcoming championships beyond our borders.
“We want to train as many youngsters as possible, so that they don’t rush into running the long distance races. We want to train them so that their longevity in that category can also be enhanced.”
