BY MAGRETH RUZVIDZO Triathlon Zimbabwe youth team coach Pamela Fulton said they utilised the South African Youth Championships and the Junior Africa Cup as a platform for athletes to gain experience at international level.
The event will be held on Sunday in Bloomfontein, South Africa, where nine athletes will be fielded in the Under-13 and Under-15 events.
In an interview with NewsDay Sport, Fulton was confident that the team had had enough preparations and it was all systems go on the big day.
“This is a young team with most athletes travelling on tour for the first time, so it is a learning curve for most of them,” Fulton said.
“These athletes have been training for many months in preparation for this event, so I feel they are all prepared. It is now time to focus on self-belief and mental strength.”
“A team of 16 will depart at lunchtime today for Bloemfontein and Wednesday was spent packing bikes,” Fulton added.
“I asked each athlete to be a proud ambassador of the country, give their best and enjoy the experience.”
The team left the country yesterday and this event is serving as a qualification for the African Championships.
