TWO Harare men sustained broken legs after they were severely assaulted with a pick handle by Chikurubi prison guards on charges of trespassing.
Michael Moses Nduna (27) and Florence Chihambakwe (32) appeared before Harare Magistrate Munashe Chibanda court facing assault charges.
They were granted $15 000 bail each and remanded to February 22 for trial.
The complainants Evidence Kutsawa and Alex Gombedza arrived in court in crutches.
Allegations are that on October 5, 2021 at around 0740hrs at Chikurubi, Kutsawa and Gombedza were coming from their residence going to Gletwin using a road which passes through Chikurubi Prison premises.
They came across Nduna and Chihambakwe at a prison recreational park and were accused of trespassing.
They were made to lie on the ground and severely assaulted with a pick handle.
After the assault, they were instructed to leave. They limped to Highlands police station where they made a report, leading to the arrest of the prison guards.
The complainants were referred to Parirenyatwa hospital for treatment. A medical report was then prepared and will be produced in court as exhibits.
