Motorists disrupt road rehabilitation: ChiTown

BY TAFADZWA KACHIKO Chitungwiza Municipality has expressed dismay over the “untoward behaviour” of some motorists who removed barricades mounted along Mayeresera Road at Makoni Shopping Centre to block vehicles from using the road being rehabilitated by the Central Mechanical Equipment Department (CMED) .

CMED was contracted by the municipality to refurbish Chitungwiza roads under phase 2 of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP).

Council spokesperson Lovemore Meya told NewsDay that some motorists destroyed the road that was being refurbished after removing the barricades.

“We are very much concerned by the unbecoming behaviour exhibited by some motorists. They removed stone barricades on Mayeresera Road and started using the road when it was still wet. Since the road was still under construction, the contractor is now forced to redo it,” he said.

“We are pleading with motorists and residents to show some respect when council is doing its duty diligently, in this case, road rehabilitation.

“The contractor had just closed for the festive holidays and residents began to throw litter on the wet tarred road, which is uncalled for. We can’t continue with rehabilitation while some parts are damaged.”

Motorists who spoke to NewsDay blamed CMED for taking long to complete the road rehabilitation projects.

“I’m sure it’s because the exercise has taken long. If I’m not mistaken, the programme started around December 17,” Solomon Bhamu said.

Another motorist, Cliff Muzuwa, said: “The roadworks have taken long, and also alternative roads are in a very sorry state.”

CMED spokesperson Tarisai Mugombi told NewsDay that she would need to go on the ground to assess the damage before she could comment on the matter.
