A LOCAL non-governmental organisation, Hand in Hand Zimbabwe, has launched self-help projects, including programmes aimed at ending gender-based violence in Chikomba district, Mashonaland East province.

Addressing participants at a prize-giving ceremony where two women’s groups were honoured for their entrepreneurial skills in ward 23, Chikomba Rural District Council assistant district development co-ordinator Monica Chamboko said the organisation’s projects had economically empowered women in the district.

“The coming in of Hand in Hand has helped reduce cases of gender-based violence,” she said.

“Women have been economically empowered to the extent that they also bring food to the table and this has helped reduce violence in homes.”

Two women’s groups Chiedza and Shingai were honoured for being the best performing poultry farmers under the Hand in Hand market linkages project.

The three-year project seeks to reinforce access to markets and finance for entrepreneurs supported by the organisation.

There are eight groups in Chikomba district supported by Hand in Hand under the project.
