A SOUTH AFRICA-BASED Zimbabwean Meli Ndlovu, who left Johannesburg on Saturday by bicycle to raise awareness on COVID-19, arrived in Bulawayo yesterday afternoon.
Ndlovu, who is a professional cyclist, won 20 awards in the sport. He coaches children in Tembisa, Johannesburg, in the neighbouring country, urging them to take the sport seriously.
On arrival, Ndlovu told journalists and people who had gathered to welcome him that he encountered several challenges on his journey to Bulawayo.
“It was not an easy journey as I had to stand through ongoing traffic, especially on the Zimbabwean side. The streets are not clear and the road is too small, full of potholes. I appeal to the government to fix the roads,” he said.
“Along the journey, I could rest for two hours and continue with my journey. I only slept yesterday in Gwanda because I had problems with my bicycle. I had to stay and fix my bicycle. At the border, they did not want me to pass through and a lot of people were afraid to take pictures. I don’t know why.”
Ndlovu urged Zimbabweans to get vaccinated against COVID.
He was born and bred in Bulawayo before relocating to South Africa to further his career.
