BY SINDISO DUBE POGUES Zim Hip-hop Awards director Aldrian “Beefy” Harrison has said this year’s ceremony would come with a difference, hence people should expect an amazing show.

Bulawayo will for the second time host the awards on December 11 at the Bulawayo Theatre.

“Our theme is Culture Breaking Boundaries. It is time we spread the event and unite the culture as Bulawayo is rich in hip-hop culture. It’s only fair to host the event in Bulawayo,” Beefy said.

“This year, everything is different, people should expect nothing, but an amazing show as the previous time we held them in Bulawayo we were not yet as organised as a brand. We were still finding our feet, but we learnt from our mistakes and we have developed from that, as they say experience is the best teacher, we are now a solid brand and we are still growing.”

He said the urban art genre, hip-hop, would be the dominating genre on the local scene.

“Hip-hop is in a good state. We are now very competitive as a genre, our artistes are working super- hard, the culture is coming alive, soon we are going to be the most dominating genre in Zimbabwe and this has begun to transpire,” Beefy said.

He added that they had rebranded the gong, after five years of using the same plaque.

“The new gong symbolises national value. We have the national bird and a star, which means our hip-hop genre is on the rise. The gong also symbolises dominion,” he said.

“It was about time we moved to a more modern look. We had been using plaques for five years, before that we had the fist, so the new design came out of the desire and need for a new feel.”

This year’s awards ceremony will be hosted by television personality Spanchi oMnyama and Skyz Metro FM radio personality Khekhe.

The awards’ categories are Best Male, Best Female, Best Collaboration, Best Hip-Hop Group, Best Producer, Best New Comer, Best Brand Supporting Local Hip-Hop, Best Album, Best Promoter, Best Diaspora, Best Radio DJ, Best Club DJ, Best Gospel, Best Dance Act, Best Underground, Best Alternative, Best Online Media, Best Journalist, Song of the Year, Video of the Year and Video Director of The Year, Best Hip-Hop Hustle, Best Hip-Hop Verse (Sweet 16 award), Hip-Hop Personality of The Year and People’s Choice.
