BY SHARON SIBINDI BULAWAYO-BASED dancer Angels “Bunnae” Mhlanga has embarked on a dance project titled Flexing for a Change to highlight challenges facing the girl child.

Bunnae is signed under Alexander Dance Lab owned by a Bulawayo choreographer, Alexander Mhlanga.

“I have embarked on a project where I am fighting for a girl child through dancing using acrobat and contour movement proving the girl child can achieve anything,” she told NewsDay Life & Style.

“My aim is to remind the girl child of the power she possesses that has an effect not only on her, but the universe as a whole.”

Through the project, Bunnae said she wants to help contribute to the change of moral and social values towards the girl child.

“I want to help in giving the girl child a voice and stop early child marriages. Let the girl child tell their own stories and the experiences they are going through…. Unite and help stop Gender Based Violence,” she said.

“As part of the project, I will be teaching and performing acrobatics in schools and out of schools using the art-form to achieve self-confidence to power a dream.”

Bunnae said she is satisfied to have managed to stood up and voice out against girl child abuse an evil that is growing every day.

“The society appears not so moved about the growing abuse of the girl child. I am fighting for laws to be passed which protect the girl child from abuse and exploitation among other issues. I would like to see girls given equal opportunities,” she said.

“Alexander Dance Lab has given me the platform and the space to tell my stories as a girl child, so I am using my talent to teach others. I feel proud of myself for doing this, other girls have lost their confidence through abuse.”

Bunnae has encouraged the girl child not to lose hope in whatever they do.

“To every girl child out there, who has felt like it’s too late to achieve a dream, trust me, your dream is waiting for you …. Go for it, age is just a number, it does not stop you from achieving your goal, I want a girl child to dream big,” she said.
