Reigning Mr Zimbabwe men’s physique champion, Tinotenda Ryan Gumbo won the International Federation of Body Building and Fitness Men’s Muscular Physique at the Arnold Classic Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the weekend.

The event, which had been hard hit by COVID-19-induced postponements, finally came to life at the weekend.

Gumbo expressed his delight at the achievement in an interview with NewsDay Sport.

“I’m ecstatic; history has been made for me and my beloved country Zimbabwe. The event was well organised as anticipated,” he said.

“The event was an eye opener. We came here to win and most importantly to learn as well. I have learnt that it’s time to move to the next category that suits my body type and that is classic physique.

“This success was built on discipline, hard work and consistency as well as we all know that it’s not cheap and easy to prepare for a competition under COVID-19 restrictions, and the patience to wait since 2019 as it was being postponed every now and again. But thanks to my sponsors Trysupps Zimbabwe.”

Gumbo is now shifting focus to other competitions that are more challenging.

This was my last show in the physique category as I look forward to competing in the classic physique category. Obviously, the vision to compete internationally stands as I now look forward to go for the National Physique Committee shows next year, he said.

Before the competition, Gumbo said he would be turning his attention to international events.

“There are local shows coming up in Zimbabwe like the Manicaland Classic on November 27 and Mr Harare on December 4 but, for me locally, I have nothing to prove, hence I will pave the way for upcoming athletes to showcase themselves at these local shows. For me and my team, our focus this year has been Arnold Classic and other international shows,” he said.

Arnold Classic is an international multi-sport festival that includes weighting, bodybuilding and a wide range of youth sports among others.
