BY MOSES MUGUGUNYEKI AWARD-WINING comedian Learnmore “Long John” Mwanyenyeka says experience gained at performance across Africa will provide impetus at his one-man show to be staged this Saturday at Reps Theatre in Belgravia, Harare.

The show, dubbed Long John Unsanitised, is courtesy of Xtratime Entertainment, a South Africa-based Zimbabwean arts hub.

Long John had been away from the local stage for close to one-and-half-years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which put restrictions on shows that attract physical gatherings.

In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, the comedian promised to keep the crowd in stitches.

“Well, fans should definitely expect a new and improved Long John. After travelling and performing in parts of Africa, I have learnt a lot about our culture as Africans and how different and yet similar we are in so many ways,” he said.

“This has given me a new and improved point of view and this show will be more informative and educational in a funny way of course.”

Xtratime Entertainment director Tongai Mbidzo said preparations for a night of great laughter were at an advanced stage.

“This is a homecoming comedy show by international comedian, Long John the Village Boy after being absent from the Zimbabwe comedy scene for more than a year,” he said. “Long John has plenty of stories to share, the most fascinating one being his collaboration with global icon Steve Harvey, with who he now has a weekly online comedy skit show.”

Mbidzo said Xtratime Entertainment’s mission was to make people laugh and forget their troubles and sorrows.

“The remedy for problems is stand-up comedy shows like Long John’s one-man show whose advance tickets are selling at Reps Theatre Box Office or on the Spotlight website,” he said.

Xtratime Entertainment is not new to bringing comedians to Zimbabwean stage, having brought Ugandan comediennes Anne Kansiime and Cotilda Inapo as well as global comics like Barry Hilton, Donovan Goliath and Jason Goliath, Farham Esat, John Vlismas and a Zimbabwean comedian based in the United States, Alfred Kainga.
