Caps United sack ‘poor performer’ Dodo

CAPS United have fired head coach Darlington Dodo a few days before the Premier Soccer League season begins.

Dodo presided over a poor run in the Chibuku Super Cup tournament with Caps, who were eliminated in the group stages, winning just two matches from a possible 10.

“We have released Darlington Dodo. Things were just not working out during his tenure. We won just two matches out of 10 and that is not a good return. So we decided it was best that we let him go. We thank him for his effort and wish him the best in the future. We are looking to appoint a new coach before the weekend matches,” club president Farai Jere said yesterday.

The Green Machine kick off the league with an away tie against ZPC Kariba. Harare City coach Lloyd Chitembwe has been linked with a return to the Green Machine. However, Jere declined to hint on who they will settle for.

“About Chitembwe, it is mere speculation, I cannot comment further. What I can say is that we will have a new coach in place by the time we play our league game at the weekend.”

Under Dodo, Caps struggled, particularly for goals as they drew most of their Chibuku Super Cup matches.

Dodo had also fallen out of favour with fans who were concerned about the team’s losing streak.

Caps, however, lost two key players, Blessing Sarupinda and Ishmael Wadi, who moved to South Africa.

It will be interesting if the Green Machine appoints  Chitembwe, considering that the former midfielder dumped Caps for Harare City in the 2019 season.

He would be the natural choice for Caps fans after he led them to a league title in 2016 and a decent run in the Caf Champions League where they reached the group stages.
