BY MAGRETH RUZVIDZO The Zimbabwe boxing fraternity is in mourning following the passing away of local boxer, Taurai Zimunya, at a hospital in Harare yesterday.

Zimunya was part of the boxers who took part in the “Rise of Champions” tournament, which was hosted by Otto Boxing Club at Borrowdale Racecourse on Sunday.

The pugilist, who was 24 years old, collapsed during a bout and died in the early hours of yesterday.

The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZNBWCB) confirmed Zimunya’s death in a statement.

“It is with great sadness that we received the news of the passing on of Taurai Zimunya who died at Parirenyatwa Hospital during the early hours of today (yesterday). Taurai was a licensed professional boxer and collapsed in the third round of a six-round non-title bout which was hosted in Borrowdale, Harare, on October 31, 2021,” the statement read.

“The boxing fraternity has, indeed, been shaken by the unfortunate incident.

“As the ZNBWCB, we join the Zimunya family, friends and entire boxing fraternity in mourning the untimely death of a budding boxer.

“All the necessary medical procedures were followed and emergency medical assistance was provided at the venue before he was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where he received further medical care. An autopsy report on the actual cause of his death is yet to be obtained from the experts.

“Burial arrangements will be announced in due course once we are advised by his family. May his dear soul rest in peace.”

Promoter Ali “Otto” Phiri also expressed grief.

“Everything was above board and his death really affected us. We are mourning together with the family over this untimely death,” he said.
