THE Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) has attributed the low uptake of the new female injectable contraceptive method called Sayana Press to scepticism, adding that women are questioning its safety.
This was disclosed by ZNFPC Midlands provincial spokesperson Nyashadzashe Marima, who told NewsDay that the injectable family planning method was safe, adding that all the scepticism expressed about it was stemming from hearsay.
“Generally, women are sceptical on switching family planning methods due to fear of side effects, the fear of commodity scarcity, and the general myths and misconceptions around these methods of which most of these are just hearsay,” she said.
“On commodity scarcity, they fear that if they switch to a new method, it could disappear from the market when they would have gotten used to it.”
Marima said ZNFPC would create demand for the injectable family planning method through use of social media platforms.
This week, the ZNFPC joined other countries in commemorating World Contraception Day. Marima said they would be offering free family planning services throughout the week.
The Sayana Press rollout started in April this year after a pilot programme was conducted last year.
